Visit preparation

Bring a short list, not a perfect speech

A useful visit leaves you knowing four things: what is being considered, why, who is responsible and what happens next.

Before the visit

Write down what the doctor or nurse cannot guess

  • The change or concern that brought you here
  • Medicines and supplements you already use
  • Allergies and past reactions
  • Health conditions and recent care
  • Pregnancy, breastfeeding or pregnancy plans, when relevant

The list does not need polished language. Names, dates from your own records and a few notes are enough to start a real conversation.

Name the proposal

Ask what the product is and why it fits

  • What is the exact generic name?
  • Is the finished product approved or compounded?
  • What goal is this meant to address?
  • What else could I do instead?
  • Is there a reason to wait, such as a test to do first?

Follow the medicine

Get the pharmacy’s recorded name

Ask who will make or dispense the medicine, where that pharmacy is located and what name will appear on the label. Save the answer for the state-record check.

As of September 2026, Colorado board policy calls for the person treating you to tell you their qualifications and confirm who and where you are.

Find every charge

Ask what changes after the first payment

  • What is due if no medicine is offered?
  • Is care billed by visit or by month?
  • Is medicine included?
  • Are tests, delivery or supplies separate?
  • What is the normal later-month amount?
Use the cost worksheet

At the end

Walk out able to say the plan in your own words

  1. The name of what is being considered
  2. The purpose discussed
  3. The pharmacy name, when medicine is involved
  4. Who to contact after the visit, and how
  5. The full expected cost

“Could you write that down in plain language?” is a complete and useful request.
